Another set of eyes
We can all look, but we don't all see the same thing. Have you ever been stumped over a problem, talked to someone else and all of a sudden the answer comes to
you? A coach can bring another set of eyes to your situation, see what you may have missed, help you find the pathway to a solution. It may be something you've
already talked to friends or family about, and they couldn't offer any answers. But let's face it, they each have their own problems, their own issues to resolve.
How focused can they be on your problems, your issues? A coach is there for you and you alone. That's the role of a coach, to work for you and lend you his eyes, his
vision. And help you see what has until now been invisible to you and perhaps to others.
Another set of ears
Did you know that much of what we listen to are the conversations we create inside our heads, and ears aren't required for that? But if that is what has been
guiding you - or holding you back - you can share those conversations with a coach who will listen carefully and then offer you feedback. Others may listen, but they may be afraid to be candid with you,
afraid of hurting your feelings, unwilling to tell you what they fear you don't want to hear. But what if what they are holding back would get you on the pathway to
success, would help you achieve your goals and objectives? Above all, a good coach will be honest and open with you. You will hear what your coach believes
you need to hear in order to move forward and get ahead. A good coach will always have your success at heart - that is the coach's job.
Another voice
Sometimes it seems like everyone has an opinion on what you should do, but how many take the time
to listen carefully to all aspects of your situation? A coach is trained to listen carefully to everything
you have to say. A good coach will ask you many questions, until he is sure he truly understands your desires and goals, what you've done in the past and what you are doing now, what has worked and
what has not. After listening carefully and gaining an appreciation of your goals and objectives, he will
offer his voice. He may suggest practices he believes would help you achieve your goal. Your goal will
become his goal as he works to put you on a pathway to making your objectives a reality. His voice is not just any voice; it is a voice you can trust to be working for you, working with you.
A caring partner on your journey
In the challenges we face in our personal and professional lives, it often seems we're struggling alone
to find solutions to resolve the issues. It may be your relationship with a partner or a child, or with a co-worker or manager. It may be achieving success, however you define that term, in life or in the
workplace. Or it may be finding an inner peace amid the stress of living or working in a hectic world that
is changing daily. A coach doesn't tell you what to do, doesn't just give advice. Rather, a coach will walk with you, as a caring partner, not ahead of you as a leader, and not behind you, prodding you
forward. A good coach doesn't take you where you don't want to go. You pick the destination, and your coach accompanies you on your journey, helping you find the pathway that will lead to achieving
your goals and objectives.
How does coaching differ from therapy or counseling?
Therapy or counseling deals with a person's past and whatever trauma they may have been exposed
to. The goal is to heal the individual. There is usually a doctor-patient relationship, in which the patient
looks to the therapist for answers. The therapist may work to treat individuals suffering from mental illness, severe emotional problems or substance abuse.
Coaching deals with the present and seeks to work in partnership with the client to identify their
goals and objectives and to guide them toward taking the actions that will lead them to a more desirable future. The coach doesn't claim to have the answers, but works with the client to help them find their
own answers. Coaching is not effective with, or intended for, individuals with mental, emotional, or substance dependency problems.
"Coaching was such a positive experience for me! It was great to have another
perspective on things that were vexing me in my organization. In running a family business, communication can be both difficult and unclear. Jim helped me
focus on the real issues and cue in on the emotions of the people I have to communicate with as well as my own. It's amazing how much nonverbal
communication we miss, and how much it affects us. It was great to have Jim to help me focus on the "big picture" rather than just reacting to issues as they
arose. He was easy to talk to, and he helped me see things I had refused to see or simply ignored in the past. I am now able to communicate better with my
fellow executives and family without feeling guilty or afraid of the outcome. I would recommend professional coaching to any organization, and I would recommend Jim as the coach!"
